Introduction to the community

The second site selected for making a documentary film is Dambana in the Uva Province. This particular village is mostly inhabited by Adi Vasis or Veddas, the indigenous people of Sri Lanka. Given the Institute’s interest in youth and multiculturalism within the film series, this endeavor is meant to focus on how youth in this particular community deal with such issues in their day to day practices and how notions of identity, the ‘other’ and cultural practices manifest in day-today practices.

Towards this end, an Institute team documented an important Vedda ritual called ‘Vedi Perahera’ at Mahiyangana in September 2007 and organized a meeting with the Vedda Chief at the University of Colombo in December 2007 which was attended by a large number of young students and faculty members. The idea here was to familiarize ourselves with some aspects of the community and also to ease access to the village later on.
