The Colombo Institute for the Advanced Study of Society and Culture (Colombo Institute) was initiated as a group in 2003. It was incorporated as a non profit company in December, 2006. At present, Colombo Institute is led by a number of individuals with interests in different academic disciplines such as anthropology, sociology, history, visual arts, theatre, languages, archeology, cultural studies and architecture.
The Institute strongly believes in critical writings on society, culture and politics in the country and beyond. It is hoped that critical literature in the social sciences and humanities would, in the long run, help expand the critical thinking abilities of youth.
Colombo Institute is engaged in producing three documentary films focused on youth that would place in context issues faced by different segments of youth as well as the ethno-cultural diversity in the country.
A monthly lecture cum discussion series in Sinhala and English was initiated in March 2008 at the Goethe Institute – Colombo.
